People think in different ways, they ask themselves different questions and they see the world differently. Sometimes we may even feel as if some people are living in a completely different universe to the one we are living in and that we are seeing, feeling and hearing completely different things. Spiral Dynamics is a way of thinking about these complexities of human existence.
What is it?
The term Spiral Dynamics® (SD) was coined by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan and is based on the original research and theory of Dr Clare W Graves. It describes how systems or ways of thinking emerge in people and what those systems of thinking are. SD provides a framework for describing the development of worldviews and gives us a scaffold from which we can analyse situations, individuals and groups/cultures and consider and reflect on the most appropriate and effective actions.
The SD model considers how people think and why people adopt the values they do, not what they think or what those values are. The thinking systems are like containers and specific values, thoughts, beliefs etc. are the contents. The key question is ‘how does a person using such a container (thinking system) think about the contents?’ SD gives us a way of answering that question and enabling us to powerfully engage with others, match their own motivational flows and identify their readiness for change, whilst better understanding ourselves.

‘Don’t ask at which level the person is functioning; ask how to deal with the levels operating in the person, in regard to a particular thing’
The SD model is therefore not a typology for categorising people but a way of exploring how individuals or groups of people are thinking at any particular time. Existing personality types exist in each and every thinking system.
